Photography, Mind & Wellbeing
Exploring the connection between landscape photography, mental health, and our relationship with nature.
Welcome. I'm Ste Walton, a landscape photographer whose experiences with autism, ADHD (AuDHD), and personal recovery have fundamentally shaped how I see the world.
Through my lens and personal writing, I explore how spending time outdoors and the creative process of capturing landscapes provide focus, help me navigate difficult emotions, and foster a deeper connection with the natural world around us.
What You'll Find Here
This space is a collection of honest reflections on life behind the camera. Expect to find articles and stories exploring:
Photography & Mental Health: How the creative process can anchor us during challenging times.
Navigating Neurodivergence: Personal insights into living, and creating with autism and ADHD.
Sensory Experiences in Nature: The unique challenges, discoveries, and unexpected rewards of outdoor photography.
Some articles document my own ongoing journey, while others explore broader ideas and experiences designed to resonate with anyone navigating their own path.
Whether you are a fellow photographer, someone living with AuDHD, an advocate for mental health and wellbeing, or simply someone who finds meaning in creativity and the outdoors—you have a place here.
Please note: These are personal experiences and reflections, not clinical advice or claims that photography is a universal solution. My hope is simply that you find something relatable, thought-provoking, or encouraging—and perhaps discover a different way of looking at both photography and yourself.
Landscape Photography for Mental Health: Finding Calm in Storms
When depression and anxiety become overwhelming, I turn to the wild weather of the South Pennines and the grounding experience of landscape photography. Through my journey with AuDHD and recovery, I explore how photographing storms, moving water and windswept moorland has helped me find a different way to navigate difficult emotions.
